whew. another week finished. i'm trying to go the extra mile with a computer program but its a pain in the butt. with my luxury of no class today i ran in the beautiful weather this morning and played some ultimate in the afternoon.
this week's total (sat. - fri.): 31 miles of running, 10 1/2 hours of ultimate. i figured when i moved out here, i'd do the stuff i wanted to do. so i guess that's run and frisbee. not a bad combo, i think.
i went to an ultimate frisbee party tonight and it was really fun; i haven't seen any of the guys off the practice field much so it was cool to get to know some people. of course, being new to the team, everyone thinks i'm a freshman. so i had to pull out my license and show some of the kids that i'm 22, and older than most of the people there. i met a few other grad students, one of whom said, "when you first said you were a grad student, i though, naw, there's no way, he looks like he's 16. but then i watched you for a little while and i could tell that you were older." that's maturity, baby. or something like that! i'm still the guy with the same big grin on my face that had joe moore calling me "smiley" at junior falcons camp in third grade. one of the guys at the party tried saying that he was older than me because he had some dirt on his chin; i just made fun of his sunglasses (we were indoors) and won that debate. the retro 70s look? that was gone five years ago.
but by far the coolest thing was checking the mail today, and finding an autographed hey mercedes poster promoting their new album, out in two weeks. my roommate came home and said, "hey mercedes? that's f'ing sweet!" boo-yeah, grandma.
music: dashboard: "a plain morning"
quote: see above.
my roommate caitie cut my hair tonight, the first time i've ever got my haircut by a girl, which is kinda weird. she rules though, and it looks good. she's cutting adam's now.
i spent a lot of time in class and working on homework today and it paid off a little because my program runs (finally!). i was soo glad the weekend starts today though because i've a lot of junk to do and could use a little break from class. not that i should complain, two days a week isn't bad, but you know.
jenna sent me a letter in the mail the other day, it took a good hard 20 days to get here. she's doing just fine, though there are the usual bumps in the road on any long trip. keep praying for her too.
i'm wiped.
music: brandston: dial in sounds
quote: "i'm going to the food store later today." ah, you mean 'grocery shopping.' c'mon, marylanders, lets not call it the food store.
the best weather i've seen all year. 75 and not a cloud in the sky. it made for some nice leisurely reading on the mall and for a good run & ultimate practice. coming home just now on my bike was actually chilly - like kelly alluded to, autumn is a nice time of the year. the leaves haven't changed at all, in fact, lots fell in the hurricane, but i imagine maryland will be quite striking with all the colors in a few short weeks.
i got three homework assignments today, due next week, and they all look really tough. frustrating-ly tough already, hopefully i can grab a few classmates and we can work on them together. that's how we can survive.
i read in the post today that some people want hillary to run for president. c'mon, are you serious?
music: pomp & circumstance was in my head for some reason
quote: "rabbit just hit me in the face!" rabbit intentionally threw a frisbee at wheeler but instead of hitting him in the leg, it hit him in the face, and boy did he have a bloody nose
"A tall lanky fellow in a gallon hat stopped his car on the wrong side of the road and came over to us; he looked like a sheriff. We prepared our stories secretly. He took his time coming over. "You boys going to get somewhere, or just going?" We didn't understand his question, and it was a damned good question.
this morning i woke up, went to take a shower, and turned the bathroom light on. and the bathroom light actually came on! woo baby, looks like Eric has power now! i don't know about interweb or anything else, but i'll take what i can get.
on tues and thurs i have four classes in a row, so now i'm on a 30-minute break before frisbee, running, and small group. the weather is beautiful outside and i can't wait to get out there!
the 'major domo' thing has been around techies for a while. i don't claim to be one of them, but i know i heard 'domo' thrown around last year. i didn't know about the guy that kinda looks like a giant turd though, he's kinda cute.
in the presidential primaries, the candidates first have to prove they can beat bush before they can prove they can beat each other. isn't that weird? everyone talks like they're the next president of the united states but i wonder who really has a chance. i think dean has received the most positive publicity (at least in the post), while articles on clark and kerry are negative and nitpicky. its shaping up to be an interesting race. i'm not super-political or anything but i want to encourage all y'all to read up on the candidates and see what they're all about. most have excellent websites, but be sure to read critically and sift through all the crap propoganda.
anyway, onto maurice clarrett for just a sec. he filed a lawsuit today, i won't rehash it but check out espn if you're curious. my opinion? stay in school. i'd love it if he were to stay at osu but if he transfers to a D I-AA school then so be it. he's been injured a lot already (for a freshman) and i'd like to see him have one full solid season before i'm convinced he's ready for the pros. what's the worst that could happen? willis mcgahee, as i recall is still making lots of $$. what's the best that could happen? a good season, learning a lot about the complexities of the offense (like the nfl has), winning a heisman, who knows? that's my thinking, anyway. people ask me a lot here because i'm from ohio but usually i just shrug and don't say much.
onto frisbee.
music: five iron: arnold & willis & mr. drummond in my head for some reason
quote: "hey!!" - my roommate adam flicking the light switch repeatedly this morning with tears of joy in his eyes
i rode my bike to campus this morning for office hours and was very happy to see that several stores are now open and some traffic lights are working.
then i noticed these stores had electricity because they had generators hooked up just outside their front doors. i walked into CVS to see that all of their frozen and refrigerated food had spoiled. most restaurants are still closed, so it looks like i'm eating at the union for all my meals today, again.
its kind of cool not having electricity because it shows you can get by without it. just bring a candle with you into the bathroom, or leave the door open when you shower. at least our electric bill will be low for the month! its our fifth day without electricity and we're all still alive, so big deal, i say.
there was a cool article on the MAC in today's washington post. it mentioned marshall, toledo, and northers illinois (who all had upsets) and bgsu as coming close. the falcons are on the map, baby!
17 penalties, justin. the skins handed the giants the game. i think they both played crappy like ohio state.
music: juliana theory, understand this is a dream (still a great album)
quote: "please, don't....guess on your homework because its really obvious that you didn't put any thought into it." - alaskan netface, talking about grading papers. i agree!
